BEING the church

May 3, 2007

Last night at our First Wednesday gathering I did something that I haven’t done in a long time…

After sharing some Q thoughts about God’s invitation to us to become living Eucharists to the world and how that’s about both pouring OUT to others and allowing God to pour INTO us, I asked people who felt like they needed to be poured into to stand up.  I then asked the people sitting around those standing to gather around them and lay their hand on their arm or shoulder and pour out to them in prayer.

It was powerful…

And while I am sure that God healed and strengthened, the thing that really impacted me the most was watching the church BE the church – loving, caring and pouring out of themselves for one another.

Something really powerful happens when we move beyond just seeing church as something we "go to" and begin seeing it as something we ARE.

Powerful is putting it mildly. For me it was one of those times where God’s presence was so strong.I could feel his arms around me. I also loved that Gabe stood there with me and saw it was Ok to be strong for others. Everything we experienced last night was exactly what I needed at that moment. Thank you Scott for always filling our souls with God’s love!

Powerful doesn’t even begin to describe how awesome last night was! Scott, you always know what we all need, when we need it. I just love our First Wednesday services. My husband & kids always look forward to them too. This service just rocked me deep in my soul. We all left feeling like the holy spirit had been hard at work in our lives. Keep up the excellent work you and your staff always do!

Sounds like it was a pretty incredible evening Scott… keep pushing people out of the boat and leading them deeper into God… you guys rock :)

Scott…how then can we capture that, so that it is not so extraordinary? What must we change to get that experience to the front?

  9. Rob Petrini says:

Mate, that sounds awesome… I’m with Michael though, how do we translate the experience and incorporate it into a real, visible aspect of the church. I’m working with the youth in our church to get away from a “myspace” style church, to a real, tangible, touching, caring and changing church, interested not just in looks or words – but also in action and deed.

Michael – what do you mean when you say “get that experience to the front”?
I’m not being critical, I actually want to know what you mean.
