Using Apple TV in Creative Meetings
4 Comments
“apple tv has really enhanced our creative mtgs at @theorchard.”
Yesterday I twittered tweeted this and immediately received several replies and DM’s from people asking me to be more specific and asking to share some of the ways we use Apple TV in our creative meetings at The Orchard. So now I feel pressure to somehow make this sound really impressive. But I won’t. I’ll just keep this brief and to the point.
How does Apple TV enhance our creative meetings at The Orchard?
Two words: AirPlay. (or is that one word?)
AirPlay allows you to stream music, photos, and videos from your iPhone or iPad directly to your television.
A few specific examples of how this looks in our creative meetings:
- Our Creative Arts Director will share and stream song ideas with the team directly from his iTunes library to Apple TV.
- Our Media guru shares design ideas (motion, print, web, etc…) with the team directly from an iPhone or iPad to Apple TV.
- We easily and instantly stream video from Netflix, YouTube, and Vimeo for creative ideas and inspiration. (BTW…we love the inspiration that comes from TED Talks as well as many indie and foreign filims. Next on our list to watch together is Exit Through The Gift Shop.)
- We can create digital mood boards by uploading the images to Flickr – and then accessing our Flickr stream through Apple TV.
- Apple TV gives us instant access to The Orchard’s entire creative digital library. (720p HD)
I’m sure there are other creative ways of using Apple TV, but those are some of the ways we’re currently utilizing it.
On a side note…and in case anyone from Apple is reading this… We would LOVE to find a way to do screen-sharing through Apple TV. Although I’m sure it’s just a matter of time.
Do you use Apple TV for your creative meetings? If so, how? Please share!
Welcome Jackson Price!

What an exciting week! Yesterday I introduced to you The Orchard’s new Creative Arts Director, Ben Thomas.
Today, I’m excited to introduce another outstanding creative who will be joining our team as The Orchard’s new Communications and Media Director……Jackson Price!
Jackson brings with him a ton of experience as a creative director, illustrator, motion, print, web & interactive designer. And he’s also one of the most likable guys I know!
In this new role at The Orchard, Jackson will oversee all aspects of internal and external web, print, and social media as well as leading and developing teams of graphic designers, videographers, editors, and other creatives.
A little background…
Jackson and his family have been a part of The Orchard Community for about three years now. In fact, I still remember the first time I met him and his wife, Lisa, one Saturday afternoon as they were walking around our campus looking for information about our church. Since that time, their entire family has dove head first into loving, serving, creating, and contributing both within our church community and out in our city in so many beautiful ways.
Even though Jackson may be somewhat of an unfamiliar face to many of you, chances are you’ve probably seen a lot of his work! In fact, many of the designs you’ve seen come out of The Orchard these past couple of years were created by Jackson in his volunteer role on our graphics team!
Here are a few of my favorites! (Click for larger images.)
We are so excited have Jackson in this new role at The Orchard!
Welcome Jackson Price!
…just the custodian.

Ran across a gem of an article on my flight back from Portland last week. It’s from the Dec/Jan issue of Fast Company and it’s about the Italian designer, Brunello Cucinelli and the good he’s doing both locally and globally.
For example, Cucinelli employs the majority of his small Italian village of around 500 people, keeps local button manufacturers and leather and cashmere providers in business, and he gives 20% of his profits to humanitarian efforts. He’s also restored a medieval castle, built a community theater, and he’s renovating a children’s park on New York’s Bleecker Street.
And I love the reason why. Check out Cucinelli’s quote from the article:
“I want to embellish the world around me, and this way, my employees feel part of a project that won’t last just three or five years, but 500 or 1,000 years,” Cucinelli says. “I don’t feel like the owner of Solomeo; I am just the custodian.”
What a powerful statement:
“I don’t feel like the owner of Solomeo; I am just the custodian.”
I. am. just. the. custodian.
Isn’t that our calling? Isn’t that the job God tasked humanity with in the very beginning? It was only when we saw ourselves as owners that we got in trouble. There’s a reason for that.
May we embrace our calling as custodians of everything. Our money. Our jobs. Our businesses. Our art. Our words. Our families. Our neighborhoods. Our cities. Our planet.
Communicating Well
1 Comment
FACT #0: The above photo has nothing to do with this post. I just like it.
FACT #1: We all believe we have something(s) important to communicate.
FACT #2: Most of what we communicate isn’t heard. Or if it is heard, it isn’t remembered. Or it doesn’t stick. It seldom moves people to action.
FACT #3: That sucks. Especially if we passionately believe in whatever it is we’re trying to communicate!
So here are three principles that are helping guide us at The Orchard Community when it comes to what/how we communicate.
INFORM (What is it?)
People need to be creatively educated and informed. I’m realizing that we ASSume way too much when it comes to what we *think* people know. Creatively informing people answers the question: What is it? But that’s not enough.
INSPIRE (Why is it important?)
This is the “why” behind the “what”. This is the part that connects with people’s hearts and imaginations. You want to inspire people to take action? Tell stories of those who have! Let them share how their lives (and the lives of those impacted on the other end) have been changed as a result. Storytelling, vision casting, celebrating, dreaming…are just a few ways to accomplish this.
INVITE (How do I sign up?)
Critical. Yet SO OFTEN overlooked. If you are going to go through the hard work of creatively informing and inspiring hearts…..yet fail to give people a clear next step or way to learn more, sign up, join, etc…..than all of the previous was a waste of time.
Now it’s your turn. What principles guide how you communicate?
