Change The Way You See Everything!

May 9, 2006

Long overdue review…

A month or two ago, I picked up Change The Way You See Everything Through Asset-Based Thinking by Kathryn Cramer and Hank Wasiak via a recommendation from my blogging friend, Paul Williams

Like I do whenever a package from shows up, I ripped the box open and found the coolest looking book design that I’ve seen in a while.  The outside of the book was bound with almost a cloth-like fabric (actually, I think all fabrics are cloth-like, right?) and the title on the front of the book was backwards.  Caught my attention!

Well as good as the outside design is, the content on the inside is even better.  As I told one of the authors, Hank Wasiak (in reply to an email he sent thanking me for purchasing the book!), reading the book was more of an "experience" than it was just a good read.

Authors Cramer and Wasiak throw out a great challenge to step out of Deficit Based Thinking (DBT) that we so easily learn to live with and into Asset Based Thinking (ABT) – which is all about identifying the assets (i.e. strengths, talents and possibilities) that are available in ourselves, others and any situation.

The pages are filled with lots of imagery and stories.  Each section is broken up nicely to allow time for lots of reflection and note taking.  And I particularly loved how most sections also include practical application exercises.  In fact, I’ve been journeying our staff through the book for the last month in our staff meetings.  We’ve used the exercises and applied them to our environments here at The Orchard and in our own personal lives.

So if you haven’t already, get the book.  It will challenge and remind you that the way in which we think affects every dimension of our lives.

Great stuff Hank & Kathryn!  And thanks, Paul, for passing on the good WOM my direction….

  2. I think you’d enjoy Paul Arden’s books, as well. He’s a former advertising exec; his latest book is called Whatever you think, think the opposite. Good stuff.
