I could make this post all about Dave Ferguson’s new book, The Big Idea, but most of you have already heard about it here, here, or perhaps over there.  So instead of focusing the premise of the book, which most of you probably already know anyway, I want to tell you a little about the dude himself.

I met Dave three or four years ago when I had moved back to Chicago to join The Orchard’s staff.  Our connection began during the THICK of our church transition/turnaround – which was a very challenging season for us.  No money….  Very few resources….  And some huge leadership challenges staring us in the face.

Yet, standing on the sidelines, cheering us on was a handful of people who were sort of like our…..I guess you could say, "voices of hope."

And Dave Ferguson was one of those voices.

Every time we connected, Dave would ask how he or his team could help us.  And it was always about GIVING and SHARING and offering whatever assistance they could to help us.  (Being raised in ministry all of my life, it was one of the most refreshing things I had seen in a long, long time…

And you know, it’s funny because I can remember scratching my head wondering why in the heck this guy – Dave Ferguson – was so willing to take the time to connect, coach and pray with some dude over in the next town who he really didn’t even know very well.

And now I see why.  It’s just who he is.  He believed in what we were doing and it was obvious.

So anyway…  Before this starts sounding like some sort of eulogy, let me just say that I am thankful for my friend Dave.  God has used him in a big way in my life.

And more than anything – THAT’S why I’m excited about his new book.  Because this is a book written by  a team of guys (Eric & Jon) who all believe in the local church and its mission in this world.  And of course, not only that but they have found a way to effectively make it happen.  And again, in the spirit of empowerment, they have taken the time to coach ALL OF US through this new book.  It’s who they are.  And they are LIVING IT, BREATHING IT, SMOKING IT, and yes – even INHALING IT.

So stop making the mission harder than it should be.  Buy the book and read it.  It will help you.

And church folks – buy it for your pastor.  Right now.

  1. Michele says:

Dave could be the twin of Cameron from Ferris Bueler’s Day Off.

  2. Chris Baker says:

He kinda looks like Edward Norton from the Italian Job, the same guy is in The Illusionist too. But yes Michele, he does look like Cameron.

  3. Kathryn says:

Michele and Chris… you are so right! He does look like those people!
But I had to add that yes, Dave, has been a great help, but so has his Children’s Ministry Director, Tammy Melchien (http://multisitekids.typepad.com/multisite_kids/)!
As busy as she is, she takes the time to answer every question and share so many resources!
    Thanks!!
