TRY SOMETHING NEW!
I’ve preached that from the mountain tops lately. “Break out of your routine!”, “Stop being boring!”, “Try something new!” And in case you’re wondering, yes…I do smoke what I’m selling. Even if I’m regretting it as I deeply inhale.
My “new” act this week? Driving in Ko Samui.
Friends…let me tell you, this is drivers ed all over again. (Except without my weird drivers ed instructor’s hand on my leg…) And not just because it’s driving on the left side of the road. That’s a first for me, but I can handle it. It’s not even the fact that I’ve almost scraped the left side of the SUV on the side of walls and buildings and dogs and people. That’s not necessarily good, but I can handle that too.
The greatest challenge of driving in Thailand is what I like to refer to as the BATS OUT OF HELL. The motorcyclists! Listen, these people are crazy! Zooming in and out and under and over traffic. Well not under and over, but I swear, it seems like it!
Remember that ColecoVision game called Turbo? When I was a kid, I’d play that game so long that the Turbo logo from the gas pedal would be temporarily tattooed to my left shin for hours after playing it. That’s what it feels like driving in Thailand for the first time. And second. And third. Or…ok, you get the point.
I’m starting to get used to it, but holy smokes, there will be no texting while this fool is driving! Heck, I can’t even touch the radio!
May the adventures continue….
G’nite from the island.
