Home Alone

May 7, 2005

I make a sucky bachelor.  I just do.

My girls (wife & two daughters) are on the East Coast at a wedding for the weekend and I just don’t know what to do with myself.

I can remember times, early on in my marriage, when Amanda would go out of town and I would do pretty well at home alone – I would do a lot of reading, a fair amount of cleaning and really enjoy my time alone.  It’s different now.

I don’t really want to do much of anything while they are gone – including reading and ESPECIALLY cleaning.  I’m a mess when they are away.  My ADD is kicked up about three levels.  I eat a lot of junk food (Cap’n Crunch & Pizza Rolls).  I watch a lot of TV.  And I even get a little cranky.  (Although, I will say that sleeping alone in a king size bed is wonderful.  Diagonal sleeping is the BOMB.)

It’s not until they are away that I realize how much of my life they consume.  And I certainly wouldn’t trade it for anything.  Tomorrow they come home – on Mother’s Day.  I’m happy about that.

I have to go.  I have a lot of sitting around to do before they get back.

How does one “get alittle cranky” all alone? Do you kick that poor mouse around? LOL

hey! HEY! HEY! HEYYYYYYYYYYY! Easy does it HODGE! I’ve been married for 8 years (1 less than you) – SO EASY OLD BOY! – Let me remind you of two things in life: GOOD EATS AND COLD DRINKS (especially w/ good ice)!!! There’s always room for those two things. Hey, get a good buddy. Where are all the good buddies in CHI-TOWN. In minneapolis we never had this problem that your talking about!

Isn’t it funny how we get used to living with another person? When we were first married, Martin would travel for 4-6 weeks at a time. I slept by myself for 25 years, but a couple months of marriage and I couldn’t sleep without him in the bed!
By now Amanda and the girls should be home… I sure hope you cleaned up before she arrived!

  5. I know I’m responding to posts a few days old now, but that’s alright.
I identify strongly. My wife was in Chile for a week, last month; I think I used no appliance other than the Microwave, the Fridge, and the Xbox, all week. The sink, up until the day before she got home, was a terrifying sight.
