New Orchard Blog

Feb 24, 2006

We’ve made the switch from Blogger to WordPress for the Orchard Blog.  The new site looks so fresh and clean. We have also been using WordPress for our podcast feed

So far, I’m really impressed with WordPress.  And for the life of me, I can’t figure out why I’m paying $90/year for Typepad when WordPress seems just as good.  Any good reasons that anyone can think of?

Looks nice. I’ve been looking at WordPress, but haven’t been able to figure out if you can do much to edit the templates (like how you have a custom header on this site). Do you know if it’s possible?

I have used wordpress for nearly a year now and love it. I considered typepad because that seems to be the popular thing and many people use it, but I’m just too cheap, so I never did that. WordPress offers total flexibility in design, there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of free WP pre-made templates available online. You can also design your own if you are so inclined. My wife designed mine, she does a good job with graphics and that kind of thing, but without her, I could find a suitable one premade that would still give my site a unique look. There are many other benefits- static pages, categories, multiple authors…on and on and on. It’s an easy download and install too.
Without typepad, you will have to pay for hosting and a domain name, but that should run less than $90/yr, at least it won’t be more.
There is plenty of online documentation available covering every aspect of WP.

Jim covered it pretty well. My blog is WordPress as well and I redesigned the template starting from a pre-made template. There was a learning curve involved, but nothing a couple days of tinkering can’t figure out.
