NPR’s All Things Considered did a piece on multi-site churches and featured two Chicago area churches – Willow Creek & Community Christian Church (where my friend Dave Ferguson is the Lead Pastor).

Check it out here.

Have you ever stood in a circle of sacred intimacy? I can’t, in this moment, possibly imagine how “pre-recorded sermons on DVD and elaborate simulcasts on video screens” could ever evoke a sense of true community. Please enlighten me.

Great question Gemma… I think that even a better question to ask is WHERE does true community take place in churches? Is it usually in the weekend services (maybe in smaller size churches)?
It seems to me that the environment where true community is going to happen is always going to be in a small group environment.
For most of these churches, the goal for their weekend services is probably not community, but rather group celebration. And if that’s the case, then having a “satellite” campus is probably a fine idea – AS LONG as they are moving people INTO community.
