Study Day Thoughts…

Nov 2, 2006

I love the city… The energy, the sounds, the smells, the people, the FOOD.  Right now, I’m sitting in a tiny Asian noodle shop on the north side of Chicago where I’m barely putting a dent in the GIGANTIC bowl of hot pepper noodles while sharing a neighbor’s open WiFi network.  (City people are so sharing too…)

I’ve been working most of the day on this weekend’s talk.  It’s the last weekend of our "BIG!" series.  This morning, I spent some time reviewing a few reports and looking at some of our stats from this last year in areas such as: attendance, percentage of "unchurched" people we are reaching, baptisms, etc… and I can’t even begin to tell you how blown away I am at what God seems to be doing at The Orchard.  Especially considering that less than four years ago, we had begun a HUGE journey of transition and change and were struggling to just SURVIVE!  And now, our staff meetings are filled with discussion and planning on how to accommodate and make room for the growth God is bringing.  It’s scary, exciting and EXTREMELY humbling – all at the same time.

And I have to add – I love our church!  Our culture is SO UNIQUE and so NOT churchy.  The people are amazing – totally real, accepting, loving and who realize that church is NOT ALL ABOUT US.  I remember a couple of months ago saying to Amanda, "The Orchard is full of the type of people I love to be around."  And it’s true.

In looking at yesterday’s comments, I’m encouraged to see that there are still churches trying to change and transition.  I’m all for church planting and always imagined that it was the direction I would have gone, but I also believe that older, existing churches have a HUGE opportunity to make a difference in our communities and even way beyond.

It CAN happen.

Now back to the noodles and writing…
